CONFUCIUS would be happy if he lived in the modern world. He would see his works and philosophies still popular among teenagers even though they speak Internet slang (網絡語言), like PK, PLMM and GG.

In Changzhou No 2 Middle School, Jiangsu, all Senior 1 students now take a course in "Lun Yu" (The Analects of Confucius, 《論語》), once a week. The school aims to improve students' appreciation of the Confucian heritage as well as ancient Chinese civilization.

"Students' attendance in this course will account for 30 percent of their Chinese score on the final exam. This reward encourages their interest in the course, which is difficult but full of wisdom," said Cao Yongzhong, a Chinese teacher at the school.

It won't be easy for students to enjoy The Analects of Confucius in ancient Chinese as they have so many other subjects to learn and exams to prepare for.

Cheng Yun, 17, didn't like the "additional burden" at first, but now it turns out to be a course that she looks forward to.

"I thought it would take up my time for homework, but it doesn't. Confucius' sentences are short and concise (精煉的). I even use some of his wise sayings in my compositions, which makes my writing more persuasive," Cheng said.

Despite the fact that all students are required to learn some chapters of the book when in junior school, they may be too young to understand the truths revealed by Confucius.

"Although I prefer the language we use nowadays to Confucius', 'The master said' in the book does help me shape my personality," said Zhang Junzhuo, 17.

Here are some of Confucius' sayings. See if you can figure out to which sentences they are in "The Analects of Confucious":

• Learning without thought is labour lost; thought without learning is perilous.

• The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.

• The gentle man is open and at ease; the mean man is full of worries and anxieties.

• Don't do to others what you would not want done to yourself.

• The mechanic who wishes to do his work well must first sharpen his tools.

59. Which do you think is the best title for this passage?

A. Difficult But Interesting                        B. “Confucius Says” Into Classes

C. I Appreciate Lun Yu                D. The Analects of Confucius

60. What does the phrase “account for” in paragraph 3 mean?

A. To explain why something happens.   B. To form a particular amount or part of something.

C. To tell the number of something.      D. To work out something.

61. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Students can easily enjoy the ideas in Lun Yu.

B. You’ll get 30 marks from learning Lun Yu.

C. Learning “Lun Yu” is an additional burden to students, as they have so many other subjects to learn and exams to prepare for.

D. The No. 2 Middle School stress that students should enjoy ancient Chinese civilization.

For many of us, cartoon strips are simply one of our pastimes. The popular Japanese manga(漫畫) provides us with an escape from reality into a world of fantasy, adventure and romance. With much less text and pictures running for pages, it fits perfectly into today’s fast, throwing away city lifestyle.
But Tsai Chih-chung,a famous Taiwanese illustrator (漫畫家), doesn’t agree. He believes cartoons can be a bridge connecting traditional Chinese culture and wisdom with the modern  world in a much wittier and more acceptable way.
He has interpreted Lao Zi, Confucius, Mencius,Zhuang Zi and Sun Zi and made their works accessible to a global audience. He has also produced two books about Zen (禪宗), introducing oriental philosophy. His cartoons are humorous yet full of wisdom and are admired as an easy way to learn Chinese classics.
After avoiding the public for ten years, Tsai made a comeback in late April with seven new works. But does his age, 61, work as a gap between him and his young readers? Tsai doesn’t think so. The topics he has covered range from philosophy in a time of individuality to the learning and memorizing techniques used at school. “Every child is a genius and has the potential beyond his own imagination, ” he said.
If popular Japanese manga is purely for entertainment, Tsai’s work, to a large extent, is to light the power of thinking in a light-hearted way. Tsai uses differenr forms of water to refer to people. In his eyes some people are like an ocean, some are like vapor, while others may be ice or
rain. But in essence(本質上)they share a similarity-human being’s forever chasing for the true and the good. “The person who thinks over life issues is not necessarily a scholar or a philosopher,” he said. “I’ve dedicated my whole life to thinking and individual freedom, not making a living.”

“Long time no see” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s email, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greetings with a ruled English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too thrilled to believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did a research on google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books, or any other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Ironically, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a world wide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see” was his trademark. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see” became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stew. All kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each other. American Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少數民族的成員) group in the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stew.
You can have some other examples than adoptions from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, susi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will modify it and make it their own, so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant, or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store. Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor.
【小題1】The writer himself felt surprised at ______.

A.the Chinglish expression “Long time no see”
B.“Long time no see” used as standard American English

【小題2】The word “stew” in the 4th paragraph probably means ______.
A.mixture literatureB.Confucius’ words

【小題3】According to the passage, it can be inferred that ______.
A.detectives translate the phrase “Long time no see”
B.Hollywood made “Long time no see”popular
C.the huge pot of stew greatly affects all kinds of languages
D.cultures can be changed in the huge pot of stew
【小題4】The main idea of the passage is that ______.
A.some Chinese expressions are introduced into English
B.you’ll not be surprised at a tofu in a restaurant in America
