It's common for kids of all ages to experience school anxiety-schoolrelated stress. This is often most
apparent at the end of summer when school is about to start again, but it can occur yearround. Where does
the stress and anxiety come from?
     Teachers

A good experience with a caring teacher can cause a lasting impression on a child's life-so can a bad
experience. While most teachers do their best to provide students with a positive educational experience,
some students are better suited for certain teaching styles and classroom types than others. If there's a
mismatch (不協(xié)調(diào)) between student and teacher, a child can form lasting negative feelings about school or
his own abilities.
     Friends

Friends can also be a source of stress. Concerns about not having enough friends, not being in the same class as friends, not being able to keep up with friends in one particular area or another, and interpersonal
conflicts are a few of the very common ways kids can be stressed by their social lives at school. Dealing
with these issues alone can cause anxiety in even the most confident kids.
     Bullies (欺凌弱小者)
Things have changed in the world of bullies since I was a kid.The good news is that teachers and parents are paying more attention. Many schools now have antibullying programs and policies. Though bullying does still happen, help is generally more easily accessible than before.
The bad news is that bullying has gone hightech. Many students use the Internet, cell phones and other
media devices to bully other students, and this type of bullying often gets very aggressive. One reason is that bullies can be anonymous (匿名的) and enlist other bullies to make their targets miserable.Another reason is that they don’t have to face their targets. So it’s easier to get rid of any empathy that they may otherwise feel. There are ways to fight against “cyberbullying”, but many parents aren’t aware of them-and
many bullied kids feel too overwhelmed to deal with the situation.

Throw the bottles and boxes of drugs out of your house. A new theory suggests that medicine
could be bad for your health, which should at least come as good news to people who cannot
afford to buy expensive medicine. This new theory argues that healing is at our fingertips: we can
be healthy by doing Yoga on a regular basis.
Supporters of medical treatment argue that medicine should be trusted since it is effective and
scientifically proven. They say that there is no need for spiritual methods such as Yoga. These
waste our time, something which is quite precious in our material world. There is medicine that
can kill our pain, xrays that show us our bones or MRI that scans our brain for tumors ( 腫瘤) .
We must admit that these methods are very effective in the examples that they provide. However,
there are some "everyday complaints" such as back pains, headaches, insomnia, which are treated
currently with medicine. When you have a headache, you take an Aspirin; when you cannot sleep,
you take Xanax without thinking of the side effects of these. When you use these pills for a long
period, you become addicted to them; you cannot sleep without them. We pay huge amounts of
money and become addicted instead of getting better. How about a safer and more economical
way of healing? When doing Yoga, you do not need anything except your energy so it is very
economical. Its popularity has spread particularly throughout America and Western Europe. In
quantum ( 量子) physics, energy is recognized as the fundamental substance ( 物質(zhì)) which the
universe consists of. Yoga depends on the energy within our bodies. It is a simple and effective
way of restoring the energy flow. There are no side effects and it is scientifically explained.
Opponents of alternative healing methods also claim that serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS
and cancer cannot be treated without drugs. They think so because these patients spend the rest
of their lives in the hospital taking medicine. How can Yoga make these people healthy again? It is
very unfortunate that these patients have to live in the hospital losing their hair because of chemotherapy ( 化療), losing weight because of the side effects of the medicine they take. Actually, it is common
knowledge that except when the cancer is recognized at an early stage, drugs also cannot treat AIDS
or cancer. Most of the medicines these patients use are to ease their pain and their sufferings. Instead
of drugs which are expensive and have many side effects, you can use your energy to overcome the
hardships of life, find an emotional balance, leave the stress of everyday life and let go of the everyday
worries. We should definitely start learning Yoga and avoid illnesses before it is too late.

We might like to think we're not influenced by other people, but a new study into the group-buying
mechanisms(機制) - like those used on coupon(優(yōu)惠券) sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial-reveals
that telling buyers who come later to the offer how many have already signed up increases the number
of purchasers.
Researchers at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management wanted to understand
why group buying sites that have entered the market recently have enjoyed greater success than those
operating a decade ago, such as Mercata and MobShop.
Earlier attempts typically left potential buyers waiting for days before confirming whether or not they
had got the offer they had signed up for.
"We think one of the reasons group-buying has been successful recently is because of the short tim
e horizon," says Rotman Professor Ming Hu, who co-wrote the study with Professor Mengze Shi and
PhD student Jiahua Wu. "It allows for a herding effect."
Another reason is the use of an information structure that discloses to later arrivals how many have
already signed onto the deal.
Researchers looked at two ways of designing the purchasing mechanism for a group buy: a
simultaneous mechanism, where no one knows how many buyers have come before them, and a
sequential(連續(xù)的) mechanism, where a second group of buyers has the advantage of knowing the
size of the first group.
The researchers' analytical(分析的) model shows the most successful mechanism is the sequential
one because it eliminates uncertainty for those coming later to the deal, and improves the confidence of
those who sign on early, as they're able to track the numbers of those who come after them.
"That boosts confidence," says Professor Hu, who teaches operations management. Deals for
"luxury" services, versus everyday items, work better in a group buy scenario(方案) because they offer
consumers a greater benefit.

1. It can be learned from the text that ______.
A. the short time horizon is the reason why group-buying has been successful.
B. a simultaneous mechanism is where a group of buyers has the advantage of knowing how many
people have signed up.
C. a sequential mechanism allows a herding effect which boosts the confidence of the buyers.
D. researchers at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management carried out an experiment
about why group buying sites entered the market successfully, such as Mercata and MobShop.
2. The underlined word "eliminates" in paragraph 7 probably means"______".
A. to become or to make something greater in amount, number, value
B. to remove or get rid of something
C. to deliberately not include something in what you are doing or considering
D. to make something known to somebody
3. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Secret for marketing success - boosting confidence.
B. Secret for group-buying mechanism-herding effect.
C. Comparison between a simultaneous mechanism and a sequential mechanism.
D. What others do influences our decisions.

Is it true that cats have nine lives? One 4-year-old American cat named Sugar definitely seems to
have more than one. Sugar fell from the 19th floor of her owner's home in Boston last month and was
only hurt a little on her chest.
"This story isn't much of a surprise," said Jake Socha, a scientist at Virginia Tech University, US, in
an interview with the BBC. "There have been lots of records of these cats surviving."
Back in 1987, scientists studied 132 cats. All of them had been brought to a vet's clinic in New York
after falling from tall buildings. Around 90 percent of these cats were alive after their fall and only 37
percent had been seriously injured.
"Being able to survive falls is a critical thing for animals that live in trees, and cats are one of them,"
said Socha.
Cats have developed special body structures to survive accidental falls. Their legs are muscular. This
can protect their bones from breaking, Professor Andrew Biewener from Harvard University told the
BBC. Cats can also spread out their legs like a parachute to reduce their falling speed, he said.
The strange part, according to scientists, is that cats have a better chance of survival if they fall from
higher than seven stories. This is because cats have a good sense of which way is down. They can twist
their bodies as they fall to make sure they land on their feet. A higher fall means more time for the cat to
change its body position.
However, you should not throw your cat out of the window to see how this works. Most pet cats are
overweight nowadays. They are not fit enough to change their position in midair, warned Steve Dale, an
American cat behavior scientist.
"This cat (Sugar) was lucky," Dale said. In fact, most cats would suffer serious lung damage, a broken
leg or a broken jaw or teeth damage, he said.

1. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Cats really do have nine lives.
B. Many cats can survive falls.
C. Cats are the softest animals in the world.
D. More than half of the cats that fall from high places end up badly injured.

2. What does the underlined word "critical" mean in the context?
A. Important.
B. Easy.
C. Challenging.
D. Serious.

3. Why can cats survive falls according to the article?
a. They have a hidden parachute in their bodies.
b. Their legs have developed in a way that protects their bones from breaking.
c. They can land on their feet.
d. They can twist their bodies to reduce the speed at which they are falling.
A. a, b
B. b, c
C. c, d
D. b, d

4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. A pet cat that falls out of a tall building is not really at risk.
B. Sugar was lucky that she was only injured in the leg.
C. Cats are confused as to which way is down when they are in midair.
D. A cat that falls from the fourth story of a building is more likely to die than one
that falls from the 10th story.

Scientists at Harvard University and Bates College find female chimpanzees (黑猩猩) appear to
treat sticks as dolls, carrying them around until they have children of their own. Young males engage
in such behavior much less frequently.
The new work by Sonya M. Kahlenberg and Richard W. Wrangham, described this week in the
journal Current Biology, provides the first evidence of a wild nonhuman species playing with dolls, as
well as the first known sex difference in a wild animal's choice of playthings.
The two researchers say their work adds to a growing body of evidence that human children are
probably born with their own ideas of how they want to behave, rather than simply mirroring other
girls who play with dolls and boys who play with trucks. Doll play among humans could have its origins
in object-carrying by earlier apes (猿類), they say, suggesting that toy selection is probably not due
entirely to socialization.
"In humans, there are obvious sex differences in children's toy play, and these are remarkably similar
across cultures," says Kahlenberg. "While socialization by elders and peers has been the primary
explanation, our work suggests that biology may also have an important role to play in activity
preferences."
In 14 years of data on chimpanzee behavior at the Kibale National Park in Uganda, Kahlenberg
and Wrangham counted more than 100 examples of stickcarrying. Some young chimpanzees carried
sticks into the nest to sleep with them and on one occasion built a separate nest for the stick. "We have
seen juveniles occasionally carrying sticks for many years, and because they sometimes treated them
rather like dolls, we wanted to know if in general this behavior tended to represent something like
playing with dolls," says Wrangham, a Professor at Harvard. "If the doll hypothesis (假設(shè)) was right,
we thought that females should carry sticks more than males do, and that the chimpanzees should stop
carrying sticks when they had their first child. We have now watched enough young chimpanzees to
prove both points."
1. What does a female chimpanzee do with sticks?
A. She gives them to her child to play with.
B. She treats them as dolls.
C. She makes useful tools from them.
D. She treats them as weapons.
2. What causes the different toy selection of chimpanzees, according to the passage?
A. Sex difference.
B. Socialization.
C. Environment.
D. Cultural difference.
3. We can infer from the fourth paragraph that ________.
A. socialization has nothing to do with human's choice of playthings
B. sex difference is the only factor in human's choice of playthings
C. the biology factor may also influence toy choice
D. people choose different toys in different cultures
4. It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
A. both humans and chimpanzees choose their playthings due to sex difference
B. different factors cause humans and chimpanzees to choose different playthings
C. only female chimpanzees have playthings
D. chimpanzees usually choose playthings for their children

Recently. a survey was done among 288,000 students. which shows that today's traditionalage college
freshmen are "more materialistic and less altruistic (利他主義的)" than at any time in the 19 years of the
poll(民意調(diào)查).
Not surprisingly. in these hard times. the students' major purpose "is to be financially well off."
Developing a meaningful philosophy of life is less important than ever. It follows then that today the most
popular course is not literature or history but accounting.
Interest in teaching. social service and the "altruistic" fields is at a low. On the other hand. enrollment
in business programs. engineering and computer science is way up.
That's no surprise either. A friend of mine (a sales representative for a chemical company) was making twice the salary of her college instructors in her first year on the job-even before she completed her
twoyear associate degree.
Though it's true that we all need a career. it is equally true that our civilization has accumulated an
incredible amount of knowledge in fields far beyond our own and that it will be better for our
understanding of these other contributions-either scientific or artistic.
Similarly. it is true that. in studying the diverse wisdom of others. we learn how to think. More
importantly. perhaps. education teaches us to see the connections between things. as well as to see
beyond our immediate needs.
Weekly we read of unions who went on strike for higher wages. only to drive their employer out of
business. No company. no job. How shortsighted in the long run!
But the most important argument for a broad education is that in studying the accumulated wisdom of the
ages. we improve our moral sense. I saw a cartoon recently which shows a group of businessmen looking puzzled as they sit around a conference table;one of them is talking on the intercom (對講機) : "Miss
Baxter. " he says. "could you please send in someone who can distinguish right from wrong?"
From the longterm point of view. that's what education really ought to be about.

1.According to the result of the survey. college students ________.
A.take developing a meaningful philosophy of life more seriously
B.have a wide range of knowledge in many aspects
C.pay more attention to the study of literature
D.have never been so materialistic as today

2.The students' criteria (標(biāo)準(zhǔn)) for choosing their majors today are largely basedon ________.
A.their own understanding of the courses
B.the financial goals they seek in life
C.the influence of their instructors
D.the vast potential for the future educational development

3.What does the fifth paragraph imply?
A.Knowledge in other fields has nothing to do with one's career.
B.Business management should be included in educational programs.
C.The importance of a broad education should not be ignored.
D.A good understanding of the civilization will make students rich.

4.The author's attitude to the effect of studying the diverse wisdom of others is ________.
A.positive
B.indifferent
C.doubtful
D.negative

5.The writer wrote the passage in order to indicate that ________.
A.college students today are not a diligent generation
B.people engaged in technical jobs lead a more meaningful life
C.career seekers shouldn't focus on immediate interests only
D.working experience outside college counts a lot to one's future career

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This
kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for
years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary (暫時的). This is the most common type. It usually disappears
quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result
or a particular situation-for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place.
Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually
does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (長期的) loneliness usually
last more than two yeas and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems
socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lone people think there is little or
nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists (心理學(xué)家) agree that one important fact in loneliness is a person's social contacts, e.g,
friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance,
our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar
interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lone people may have many social
contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy
and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart
disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness
can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.
1. How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage?
[     ]
A. Talk to friends
B. Just ignore it
C. Go to see a doctor
D. Ask your teachers for guidance
2. The topic of the 4th paragraph is that _____.

B. lonely people don't have many social problems
C. one problem of loneliness is a person's social contacts
D. we depend on various people for different reasons
3. Why do psychologists want to help chronically lonely people?
[     ]
A. Chronic loneliness can cause family problems
B. Chronic loneliness can cause serious illness
C. Chronic loneliness cannot be overcome
D. A, B, and C are all correct
4. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Three kinds of Loneliness
B. Loneliness and Diseases
C. Loneliness and Social Contacts

The iPhone, the iPad, each of Apple's products sounds cool and has become a fad (一時的風(fēng)尚).
Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter "i" - and many other brands are following
suit. The BBC's iPlayer - which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet -adopted the
title in 2008. A lovely bear - popular in the US and UK - that plays music and video is called "iTeddy".
A slimmed-down version of London's Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name
"i".
In general, single-letter prefixes (前綴) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as
e-mail and e-commerce first came into use.
Most "i" products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent's
"i", it's no surprise that they've selected this fashionable name.
But it's hard to see what's so special about the letter "i". Why not use "a", "b", or "c" instead?
According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King's College, London, "i" works because
its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses "i", no one knows whether it means Internet,
information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. "Even when Apple created the iPod,
it seems it didn't have one clear definition," he says.
"However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability (輕便) ."adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter "i" also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual.
Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with "Google" and "blog", readers of BBC Magazines voted "i" as one of the top 20 words
that have come to define the last decade.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with "2000" in
their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern.
However, as we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared.
1. People use iPlayer to __________.
A. listen to music
B. make a call
C. watch TV programs online
D. read newspapers
2. We can infer that the Independent's "i" is aimed at __________.
A. young readers
B. old readers
C. fashionable women
D. engineers
3. The underlined word "ambiguous" means "__________".
A. popular
B. uncertain
C. definite
D. unique
4. Nowadays, the "i" term often reminds people of the products which are __________.
A. portable
B. environmentally friendly
C. advanced
D. recyclable
5. The writer suggests that __________.
A. "i" products are often of high quality
B. iTeddy is alive bear

be there for him when he needs you.
Expect a lot from your child, just not everything.Except for health and safety problems, such as drug
