Recently. a survey was done among 288,000 students. which shows that today's traditionalage college
freshmen are "more materialistic and less altruistic (利他主義的)" than at any time in the 19 years of the
poll(民意調查).
Not surprisingly. in these hard times. the students' major purpose "is to be financially well off."
Developing a meaningful philosophy of life is less important than ever. It follows then that today the most
popular course is not literature or history but accounting.
Interest in teaching. social service and the "altruistic" fields is at a low. On the other hand. enrollment
in business programs. engineering and computer science is way up.
That's no surprise either. A friend of mine (a sales representative for a chemical company) was making twice the salary of her college instructors in her first year on the job-even before she completed her
twoyear associate degree.
Though it's true that we all need a career. it is equally true that our civilization has accumulated an
incredible amount of knowledge in fields far beyond our own and that it will be better for our
understanding of these other contributions-either scientific or artistic.
Similarly. it is true that. in studying the diverse wisdom of others. we learn how to think. More
importantly. perhaps. education teaches us to see the connections between things. as well as to see
beyond our immediate needs.
Weekly we read of unions who went on strike for higher wages. only to drive their employer out of
business. No company. no job. How shortsighted in the long run!
But the most important argument for a broad education is that in studying the accumulated wisdom of the
ages. we improve our moral sense. I saw a cartoon recently which shows a group of businessmen looking puzzled as they sit around a conference table;one of them is talking on the intercom (對講機) : "Miss
Baxter. " he says. "could you please send in someone who can distinguish right from wrong?"
From the longterm point of view. that's what education really ought to be about.

1.According to the result of the survey. college students ________.
A.take developing a meaningful philosophy of life more seriously
B.have a wide range of knowledge in many aspects
C.pay more attention to the study of literature
D.have never been so materialistic as today

2.The students' criteria (標準) for choosing their majors today are largely basedon ________.
A.their own understanding of the courses
B.the financial goals they seek in life
C.the influence of their instructors
D.the vast potential for the future educational development

3.What does the fifth paragraph imply?
A.Knowledge in other fields has nothing to do with one's career.
B.Business management should be included in educational programs.
C.The importance of a broad education should not be ignored.
D.A good understanding of the civilization will make students rich.

4.The author's attitude to the effect of studying the diverse wisdom of others is ________.
A.positive
B.indifferent
C.doubtful
D.negative

5.The writer wrote the passage in order to indicate that ________.
A.college students today are not a diligent generation
B.people engaged in technical jobs lead a more meaningful life
C.career seekers shouldn't focus on immediate interests only
D.working experience outside college counts a lot to one's future career

Re-gifting only with care

At this busiest gift-giving time of the year, many of us wonder what to do with the unwanted presents we get. Is it all right to re-gift--to give the unwanted present to someone else?

A gift is a symbol of what a relationship means to us. The best gifts meet the needs or satisfy the desires of the receiver. A gift should be about pleasing the other person, not showing off the taste, wealth or power of the giver. We should give with the other person, not ourselves in mind.

Still, a friend, colleague or family member who knows us well might now and then buy us something that is the last thing we'd buy for ourselves. People in long-term relationships can be surprised at the choices in clothes, music or gadgets(小玩意) made by their friends or relatives.

Re-gifting creates a dilemma(窘境) because we don't want to hurt the feelings of the gift-giver, but we also feel it's wasteful not to use something that might benefit someone else.

Re-gifting avoids waste and repays a debt of gratitude we owe to someone else, but it presents the risk that the original giver will be hurt if she or he discovers what we did.

Following are a few guidelines for re-gifting:

  -Don't use the gift.

-Re-gift soon, so you don't risk re-gifting to the original giver.

-Make sure that the new receiver doesn't know the original giver or is unlikely to run intohim or her.

If there's a possibility that the original giver could learn about the re-gift or if he or she expects to see you wearing the gift, consider asking for permission. Let him or her know how much you appreciate the thought behind the gift. A person who understands that a gift is intended to be pleasing will understand.

As long as the person who gave the unwelcome gift doesn't mind or won't find out, you can re-gift with a clear conscience. Besides, you can be sure that at least one of the gifts you've received was given originally to someone else.

(1)

According to the author, the gift that you want to buy for your friend had better be the one ________

[ ]

A.

that can benefit someone else

B.

that you want to buy for yourself

C.

that is a necessity for your friend

D.

that will surprise your friend

(2)

In the third paragraph, the author wants to tell readers that ________.

[ ]

A.

people sometimes get the gifts that they don't really like

B.

our friends usually choose the best gifts for us

C.

we should not buy clothes, music or gadgets for our friends

D.

your best friend should know what gift is the best for you

(3)

What can we infer from the last sentence of the passage?

[ ]

A.

The gift you get is the one you bought for someone.

B.

Re-gifting is a very common practice today.

C.

You should re-gift at least two gifts each year.

D.

More than one of your friends will re-gift their presents to you each year.

(4)

According to its meaning, the sentence "After all, some people like orange and red sweaters, or the complete recorded works of Wayne Newton (US singer), or fruitcake (which you don't like at all)." should be put at the end of ________.

[ ]

For most of us, the purpose of the holidays is to bring peace, love, and goodwill towards all.Yet, for many, the holiday season often means stress, tiredness, pressure, disappointment and loneliness.

These feelings, often known as the “holiday blues,” may be even more common this year, due to the emotional disorder of the past few months, not to mention the unsteady economy.Experts say even the more usual tasks of shopping, decorating, late-night parties, cooking, planning and family reunions can be holiday stressors.

In addition, the psychological phenomenon known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, may bring a specific type of depression related to winter's shorter days and longer nights.

“Certainly just because it's the holidays doesn't mean people are going to be happy,” says Dr.Doug Jacobs of Harvard University.“And this will be a particularly hard holiday for some who are dealing with a lost job, debt, or even a lost loved one.”

And with family reunions becoming less frequent events over the years, there is now the added pressure of getting just one chance to get it all right.“Families are much more different now,” says John Stutsman, a clinical psychologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The disappointment and sense of unfriendliness that often results from family gatherings, he adds, are actually a realization that “the fantasy is not met”.

Still, say experts, the blues should be dealt with. The most essential step, says Stutsman, is for the individual to admit their feelings and the reason for their depression.“Disagreement will only compound the stress they're feeling.”

Stutsman recommends people do things that are normally comforting in order to get a handle on the holiday stress.“If they're feeling a little blue, they should try to do things personally satisfying for them.Maybe this is exercise, cooking, reading a book, or massage.”

Stutsman also advises that sometimes “avoidance is actually not such a bad idea”.In some situations, fulfilling social obligations may be self-destructive when the best thing may be to just stay home.“The healthy choice has to do with taking care of oneself.”

(1)

According to the passage, holiday blues ________

[ ]

A.

didn't exist before

B.

bring peace, love, and goodwill towards all

C.

result from various factors

D.

happen to every one of us

(2)

In the opinion of John Stutsman, ________

[ ]

A.

family gatherings have become less frequent events over the years

B.

people usually feel disappointed when their families get together

C.

families are friendly to each other as usual

D.

holidays doesn't mean people are going to be happy

(3)

It can be concluded from the passage that the most important thing to deal with the blues is to ________

[ ]

A.

stay at home

B.

do things that are normally comforting

C.

fulfill social obligations

D.

admit your feelings and the reasons for your depression

(4)

Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

[ ]

A.

Family Reunions

B.

Emotional Disorder

C.

Holiday Blues

D.

Everybody has had at least one experience from which he knows the meaning of life. This time, which took place several years ago, but seems as if it just happened.
On an afternoon several years ago, my brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister’s dress and picked out a beautiful skirt. “ Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.” he said.I guess this was the occasion: it was the funeral of my sister, after her unexpected death.
He took the shirt and put it on bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the funeral. Then he closed the drawer and turned to me, “Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you’re alive is a special occasion.”
I’m thinking about his words, and they’ve changed the way I live my life. I’m spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a kind of experience to enjoy, not to suffer. “Someday ”and “one of these days ”are losing their importance  on my vocabulary. If it’s worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.
Ever since that day, I have been trying very hard not to put off, hold back or save anything that would add laughter and color to our lives. Every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath, truly is a gift. So cherish every day and find the true meaning of your life.

第一節  閱讀理解(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D項中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

A person has to be sixteen to drive, seventeen to see certain movies, and eighteen to vote. People can get terrific discounts on all sorts of stuff-provided they’re over sixty-five. Everywhere we look there are age limits that define what people can and can’t do. But creativity has no boundaries, no limitations. Anyone can invent. And they do. Inventors are popping up at the youngest ages.

Sitting in the car waiting for her mom to return from shopping, Becky decided she might as well try to finish her math homework. But it was growing dark and getting hard to see the paper.

“I didn’t have a flashlight, and I didn’t want to open the car door because then the whole car would light up.” recalled Becky. “So I thought it would be neat to have my paper light up somehow, and that’s when the idea came to me.”

It isn’t every day that a ten-year-old invents a product eagerly sought by several businesses, but that’s exactly what Becky Schroeder did when she created a tool that enabled people to write in the dark. Her invention? The Glo-sheet.

That night Becky went home, trying to imagine different ways of making her paper glow in the dark. She remembered all sorts of glow-in-the-dark toys-like balls and Frisbees-and wondered how they were made. She was determined to find a solution. So they very next day, Beck’s dad took her on an outing to the hardware store. They returned with a pail (桶) of phosphorescent paint. She took the paint and stacks of paper into the darkest room in the house-the bathroom. There, she experimented.

“I’d turn on the light, turn it off, turn it on,” said Becky. “My parents remember me running out the room saying ‘It works, it works! I’m writing in the dark!’ ”

She used an acrylic board and coated it with a specific amount of phosphorescent paint. She took a complicated idea and made it work rather simply. When the coated clipboard is exposed to light, it glows. The glowing board then illuminates or lights up the paper that has been placed on top. Two years after her initial inspiration, in 1974, Becky became the youngest female ever to receive a U.S. patent.

She didn’t actively market her Glo-sheet. She didn’t need to. The New York Times wrote an article about an incredible invention-patented by a twelve-year-old, and the inquiries and orders streamed in.

1. From Paragraph 1 , we can draw a conclusion that _________.

A. it is illegal for one to drive under sixteen

B. people enjoy privileges when over sixty-five

C. one is never too old or too young to invent

D. people hate the limitations that define our behavior

2. What caused Becky to invent Glo-sheet?

A. She was trying to do homework when it got dark.

B. She was having trouble with math problems.

C. She was trying to earn some money.

D. She was working on a school project.

3. What is the meaning of the underlined words “phosphorescent paint” in paragraph 5?

A. paint that acts as a glue                                  B. paint that covers a mark

C. paint that becomes hard                                 D. paint that glows in the dark

4. What does it mean that Beck “didn’t actively market her Glo-sheet” according to paragraph 8?

A. She kept the original one for her own use.

B. Other people came to her for the Glo-sheet.

C. Becky’s father tried to sell the Glo-sheet.

D. She gave away patent to the government.

5. With which statement would Becky most likely agree?

A. Experience is needed to be a good inventor.

B. Only by inventing things can you know what people need.

C. Always try to sell patent rights to large companies.

D. You never know what you can do unless you try.
