In 2001 I was in the 4th grade, in an elementary school for kids with military parents. On Sept. 11, class seemed   36   except there were quite a few kids that didn't   37   that day. A

D.J.: One year, my school report made my parents angry. On Christmas Eve, all the presents were stolen along with the TV. My parents told me there were no presents because Santa was so angry with my behavior over the past year. The next year I slept downstairs with a plastic sword waiting for Santa to make sure he didn't steal the present.  Next morning, when I woke up, I saw Santa standing there. As soon as I saw there were no presents, I grabbed my plastic sword and ran at him in a rage shouting "THIEF! THIEF!"

Lucy K.: When I was younger, we always had one specific room that the Christmas tree was always in. My mom never really liked the location, so one year, she moved the tree into another room. I was convinced that Santa would not know where the tree was and would get lost in our house. I was worried he would be mad and would not give me any gifts because he couldn't find the tree and put me on the "bad" list. I came up with the brilliant idea to make signs leading from the fire place to the tree. They said stuff like "Tree this way" or "Santa, put the gifts over here." When my big brother saw them he started laughing his head off.

Tom: Everyone remembers going to the mall and sitting on Santa's lap to take a picture at Christmas time?
Well I used to think that if I did that Santa would get mad because he had to go all around the world and let every kid around the world have a chance to take a picture and of course his lap would hurt and he would be so tired. I thought he would keep a copy of the picture and that's how he decided who would be on his naughty list.
My mom couldn't get me onto Santa's lap until she made him promise I wouldn't end up on his naughty list.

56. In fact, who took away D.J.’s TV?

  A. Santa.           B. A thief.             C. His parents.             D. His teacher.

57. Why did Lucy K’s brother laugh when he saw the signs?

  A. Because he found his sister’s behavior silly.

  B. Because he thought the signs were interesting.

  C. Because he knew there was no real Santa at all.

  D. Because he wanted to make fun of his sister.

58. What conclusion can we draw from the third story?

  A. Tom’s mother was strict with him.

  B. Tom took a picture with Santa every year.

  C. Tom didn’t believe in Santa.

  D. Tom was not a good boy.

59. The best title for the three stories is _______.

  A. Belief in Santa             B. The Excitement on Christmas

  C. Gifts for Christmas        D. Opinions about Santa

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you, Mr. Lin. That was an interesting speech. It is obvious that you are very concerned about the present situation of our environment. As an economist, I’m often seen as being against the environment. When people think of factories, they think of clouds of dirty smoke or a pipe pouring chemical waste into a river. They think of greedy businessmen hiding from their responsibilities to the environment and only thinking about money. People often think that economic development is bad for the environment, but this does not have to be true.

What I’m here to say is that having worked side by side with many environmentalists, I know that a healthy environment and a stable economy should be possible at the same time. There are many factories and industries which control the amount of pollution they produce, and are very careful to spend money repairing any damage they cause. The people running these factories are very concerned about the environment. We need to stop thinking of companies and money as the enemy!

Mr. Lin suggested we should cut back on the amount of things we produce in order to save the environment. I don’t agree with him because then jobs will be lost. I believe that people are more important than fish and trees.

But I do agree that recycling may be the key to helping both sides. We should produce more things from recycled materials, and less from materials taken directly from the environment. What we need is more effective laws to preserve the environment, which still allow the economy to grow. This includes more inspections to control how many trees are cut down and how many fish boats can catch. This might make wood and seafood more expensive, but paying a higher price for some things is not always bad for the economy. Asking around, I find many people willing to pay slightly higher prices for things that are environmentally friendly.

Finally, those factories which pollute the environment should have to pay higher taxes. So, if you want to harm the environment, you have to pay to do it, and I agree with that. Thank you for listening.

64. According to the passage, Mr. Lin may be ______.

A. an environmentalist                     B. a TV presenter

C. an economist                              D. a businessman

65. According to the passage, the speaker argues that ______.

A. economic development has badly damaged the environment

B. it is possible to achieve a balance between the economy and the environment

C. factories should pay much more attention to the economy than the environment

D. companies and money are the enemy of the environment

66. The speaker thinks production should not be cut back because ______.

A. products can’t meet people’s demand

B. people are as important as fish and trees

      C. it will endanger animals and plants

D. many people will be out of work

67. According to the passage, Mr. Lin and the speaker both agree that ______.

      A. factories should pay higher taxes

      B. the growth of the population should be controlled

      C. we should expand the recycling industry

      D. factories polluting the environment will be punished.

68. The underlined word “which” in paragraph 4 refers to ______.

       A. effective laws    B. recycled materials     C. the environment        D. inspections

D

On Sunday people in the United States will roll their clocks forward an hour at 2 a.m. and begin the country's second consecutive (連續(xù)的) year of extended daylight saving time.

The change, adopted into law last year, was regarded as a way to save energy. But some studies suggest the move actually has consumers using more power―and paying bigger energy bills.

Hendrik Wolff, an environmental economist at the University of Washington in Seattle, is doubtful about the possible savings. Wolff and colleague Ryan Kellogg studied Australian power-use data surrounding the 2,000 Sydney Olympics, when parts of the country extended daylight saving time to accommodate(使適應(yīng))the games. The pair compared energy use in the state of Victoria, which adopted daylight saving time earlier than normal, to South Australia, which did not. "Basically if people wake up early in the morning and go to bed earlier, they do save artificial(人為的)illumination at night and reduce electricity consumption in the evening," Wolff said. "Our study confirmed that effect. But we also found that more electricity is consumed in the morning. In the end, these two effects wash each other out." Wolff stresses that it's difficult to determine how increased daylight saving time affected energy use across the U.S. last year. But he's tended to reject the government's pre-change projections of modest energy savings.

Kotchen, an economist at the University of California, and colleague Laura Grant were able to observe changes in energy use in homes throughout southern Indiana over a three-year period when the entire state adopted daylight saving time in spring 2006, their finding was clear: The switch to daylight saving time cost Indiana homeowners dearly on their electric bills. The study found that daylight saving time did save on lighting use but that heating and air-conditioning use more than offset any gains.

69.Which is the best title for this passage?

A. An Energy Saver

B. How Americans Save Energy

C. Extended Daylight Saving Time

   D. Extended Daylight Saving Time Not an Energy Saver?

70. According to the passage, “Extended Daylight Saving Time” ______.

   A. was introduced in the United States two years ago

   B. plays an important role in protecting environment

   C. was officially approved in the United States last year

   D. was an effective way to save power

   A. lighting provided by lamps, lights etc.          B. explanation for energy-saving

C. waste of energy                       D. the length of time

72. The author’s attitude towards “Extended Daylight Saving Time” can be described as ______.

第二節(jié) 簡答題(共3小題,每小題2分,滿分6分)

根據(jù)各小題的具體要求,簡要回答問題。

Children who forget easily and never seem to finish tasks or pay attention might be found to have A.D.D. If, in addition, they seem overly active and unable to behavior themselves because of lack of self-control, it might be A.D.H.D.

Experts say the cause involves a chemical imbalance in the brain. It can affect not only school, but also personal relationships and the ability to keep a job later in life. Many of those affected also have learning disabilities or suffer from depression (抑郁).

Medicines can produce calmer, clearer thinking for periods of time. But the drugs can also have side effects like weight loss and sleep problems.

Susan Smalley, a psychiatry(精神病學(xué))professor at the University of California, just led a study of A.D.H.D. in northern Finland(芬蘭).

The study found that rates and signs of A.D.H.D. are about the same in children there as in the United States. The Finnish children are rarely treated with medicine, while medication is widely used in the United States. Yet the study found that the two populations have few differences with A.D.H.D. among older children and teenagers.

Professor Smalley says medication is very effective in the short term. But she says the study raises important questions about the long-term effectiveness of current treatments.

The study also found that only about half the Finnish children diagnosed with A.D.H.D. had deficits in short-term memory and self-control. These cognitive (認(rèn)知的) deficits are generally considered part of the definition of A.D.H.D.

The study also found more evidence that A.D.H.D. symptoms―hyperactivity (活躍過度) and lack of self-control decrease―change with age. But about two-thirds of children continue to show high levels of inattention as teenagers.

73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “deficit”.

Clean energies are forms of energy which do not pollute the air, the ground, or the sea. Clean energies include the following forms.

Solar power describes a number of methods of using energy from the light of the Sun. It has been present in many traditional building methods for centuries, but has become of increasing interest in developed countries as the environmental costs and limited supply of other power sources such as fossil fuels are realized. After passing through the Earth's atmosphere, most of the sun's energy is in the form of visible and ultraviolet light. Plants use solar energy to create chemical energy through photosynthesis (光合作用). We use this energy when we burn wood or fossil fuels or when we consume the plants as a source of food.

Tidal power is a means of electricity generation achieved by capturing the energy contained in moving water mass due to tides. Two types of tidal energy can be extracted: kinetic(運(yùn)動的)energy of currents due to the tides and potential energy from the difference in height (or head) between high and low tides.

Wind power is the kinetic energy of wind, or the extraction of this energy by wind turbines (渦輪). This article deals mainly with the large-scale deployment of wind turbines to produce electricity.

Wave power refers to the capture of ocean surface wave energy to do useful work including electricity generation, and filling a reservoir with water. Wave power is a form of renewable energy. Wave power generation is not a widely employed technology with only a few experimental sites in existence.

Geothermal power is electricity generated by utilizing naturally occurring geological heat sources. It is also a form of renewable energy.

Text 1:

W: Did you hear? The weather report says we’re going to get at least a foot of snow tomorrow.

M: That much? I can’t wait to go outside and play in it.

Text 2:

W: My dinner tastes kind of funny.

M: Then why don’t you have the waiter bring you something else?

Text 3:

W: Summer is over at last to put T-shirts away.

M: I’ve been waiting for this for months.

Text 4:

W: We hope you enjoy your stay here at the hotel. Here is your room key and by the way, check-out time is twelve at noon.

M: Oh, thanks for reminding me. It’s a lovely hotel, but I wouldn’t want to be charged for a second night.

Text 5:

W: Mind if I borrow your English workbook?

M: Not at all. But please give it back before dinner so that I can take it to class this evening.

Text 6:

W: It starts very early.

M: What starts very early?

W: Why, the famous Thanksgiving sale, of course.

M: Is it worth going?

W: Is it worth going? Just listen to this and you can tell me. We've got fantastic bargains for all the family. Notebook computer for $715, cassette players for $20, radio alarms only $17, MP3 for $74, pure woolen blankets for $7.99, six wine glasses for just $3.45.

M: All right, all right. I suppose I'd better go along and have a look.

Text 7:

W: You look pale. What’s wrong?

M: My chest hurts and it is difficult for me to breathe.

W: I’m sorry to hear that. Have you seen the doctor?

M: Yes, I have. I have been to the doctor’s. The doctor gave me some medicine.

W: How long have you been like this?

M: I have been like this since this morning.

W: What makes your chest hurts?

M: I think it may be the terrible gas the chemical plant produces.

W: Why don’t you stay at home today?

M: I don’t want to stay at home because I’m afraid I’ll miss today’s lessons.

W: Don’t worry. Take care of yourself. I can help you with your lessons.

Text 8:

W: Hi, are you being helped?

M: No, I’m not. I’m interested in some socks.

W: All our socks are here. What do you think of this pair here? It’s made of silk.

M: Hm, it looks nice, but I’d like to have something warm for the winter.

W: Maybe you would like heavy wool socks. How about this pair?

M: I think that’s what I want. How much is it?

W: It’s …forty dollars.

M: It’s a little expensive. Do you think it’s possible to get a discount?

W: Hm, since you like it so much, how about a 10 percent discount. That’s the best I can offer.

M: That’s good.

M: Is there anything else I can get for you, a pair of gloves?

M: No, that should be it. Thank you.

Text 9:

W: I plan to take a trip to the west in August, so I need to make some money. Do you know any ways of making money?

M: How about delivering milk?

W: I already thought of that, but I don’t have a bike.

M: How about walking dogs?

W: What? Walking dogs?

M: Yeah, you know, there are lots of people around here with little dogs. The dogs have to be walked every day. That's good for their health.

W: I don’t know. How much can I make?

M: More than delivering milk.

W: Well, I do like animals. How do you go about finding dogs to walk?

M: Put an advertisement in the Sunday newspaper.

W: And how much is an ad?

M: An ad is under ten dollars, I’m sure. You can try for two dollars for half an hour-―that would be ten dollars for five times a week. You can walk three or four dogs every day after school, you can get rich.

Text 10:

W: Hi, this is Susan. I am not able to answer your phone call at the moment. Please leave your message.

M: Hi, Susan. This is Jack. I’ve called you four times this afternoon. We have some problems with our research plan and Professor Smith wants us to discuss it again. Mostly it’s about the finishing time. She wants us to finish it sooner. I wonder if you would be free on Wednesday afternoon or evening. I will be in my room then. If you cannot make it on Wednesday, I will be free on Thursday morning and Friday evening. Please fix a time and give me a ring. By the way, I have left the research plan with Professor Smith’s suggestion at Linda’s place. Please pick it up and have a look before discussion.

Dear Mr. David,

I’m glad to hear from you. Now I’m writing to tell you something about the Chinese freeze. The worst snow storms seen in China for 50 years have brought great damage to the country. The snow severely destroyed China’s transportation system. Hundreds of railway lines and highways were impassible as the record snowfall had cut power lines and blocked roads. Thousands of people were stopped at railway stations for days. They were all desperate to get to their homes in time for the Chinese New Year holiday.

The government called upon soldiers to clear the snow. Many kind-hearted people donated their money and clothes to the victims.

With the help of the government and people all over the country, we succeeded in getting through the snow storms. Now everything has returned to normal.

                                                            Yours,

Li Hua
