How to Teach a Child Respect

As a child grows out of being an infant(嬰兒)and begins to notice and react to the world around them, you may find yourself wondering how you possibly pass all of the things that they need to become a responsible, respectful adult.   1  A child who learns to respect all he meets not only receives respect from others in kind, but learns to respect himself as well.

Instructions

★1 Show your child respect. This is perhaps the best way to teach your child how to respect others. Listen to your child by giving her your full attention and she will learn to listen to you, understanding how important this is in relationships.

★2   2  The more you say "please" and "thank you" to your child, the more likely he will learn to use them with you and others. Politeness then becomes a normal part of any conversation.

★3 Agree to disagree.  3 Explain your decision so that she will understand your reasoning and expect respectful responses. Disagreeing with you aren’t equal to disobedience.

★4 Control your impulse to overreact. When a situation arises between you and your child that requires calmness, keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behavior.  4

★5 Praise, praise, praise! So much is focused on what a child does wrong and how to correct it that the accomplishments are not celebrated enough.   5

A.Teach manners by using polite requests and responses.

B.Try to remember that a child won’t always agree with you.

C.Respect is necessary for a meaningful and successful life.

D.If he sees you lose your temper, he is more likely to respond that way in future.

E.A child may act like he pleases, but will respect being given limits.

F.When you see you child exhibit respectful behavior, make sure he knows just how proud you are of him.

One woman in nine will develop breast cancer (乳腺癌) over her lifetime. However, a healthy diet can reduce your risk of developing the disease by 40 to 60 percent.

Generally speaking, eating more vegetables can reduce your risk of developing breast cancer by 60 percent. Vegetables like cabbage are rich in fiber (纖維), can lower your risk of developing breast cancer. To get the most from their goodness, it's recommended that you eat at least three to four cups of these vegetables per week.

It's the oleic acid (油酸) contained in olive oil. American scientists conducting laboratory research have observed that oleic acid has a beneficial effect on breast cancer cells. Olive oil is the richest source of this acid, so whenever possible, use it in place of butter.

Eating fruit is another excellent way to help prevent the development of breast cancer. In fact, women who do eat fruit are six percent less likely to develop the disease. The American Institute for Cancer Research considers berries (漿果類) (blueberries, strawberries, etc.) to be powerful for breast cancer fighters.

It's the lycopene (番茄紅素), found in great quantities in tomatoes, that can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. The lycopene found in canned tomatoes is more readily absorbed by the body than that contained in fresh ones, so add tomato juice, paste, and sauce to your diet.

As a result of various studies, the American Institute for Cancer Research has concluded that components (成分) found in green tea can help halt the development of cancerous tumours (瘤) and even prevent them from appearing in the first place. Three cups a day will help you get the benefits of green tea.

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.
Tea remained rare and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.
At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.
At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess(公爵夫人)found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’ clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born.
59. Which of the following is true of the introduction of tea into Britain?
A. The Britons got expensive tea from India.
B. Tea reached Britain from Holland.
C. The Britons were the first people in Europe who drank tea.
D. It was not until the 17th century that the Britons had tea.
60. This passage mainly discusses ____________ .
A. the history of tea drinking in Britain
B. how tea became a popular drink in Britain
C. how the Britons got the habit of drinking tea
D. how tea-time was born
61. Tea became a popular drink in Britain____________.
A. in the eighteenth century           B. in the sixteenth century
C. in the seventeenth century          D. in the late seventeenth century
62. We may infer from the passage that the habit of drinking tea in Britain was mostly due to the influence of _________.
A. a famous French lady      B. the ancient Chinese
C. the upper social class      D. people in Holland

The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world. But to those who are new to it all, sometimes it can be confusing.

October is usually the busiest month in the college calendar. Universities have something called Freshers’ Week for their newcomers. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life.

However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, the prospect (前景) of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nerve-wracking (令人焦慮不安的). Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should you join?

Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot. So just take it all in slowly. Don’t rush into anything that you’ll regret for the next three years.

Here are some top advice from past students on how to survive Freshers’ Week:

● Learn rules. Make sure you know British social etiquette (禮節(jié)). Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends.

● Be kind. Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a head start in making friends.

● Be sociable. The more active you are, the more likely you’ll be to meet new people than if you’re someone who never leaves his room.

● Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you’re in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you’re friendly.

So with a bit of clever planning and effort, Freshers’ Week can give you a great start to your university life and soon you’ll be passing on your experience to next year’s freshers.

1.We can learn from the passage that ______.

A. Freshers’ Week usually comes in September in UK

B. all the students are required to join certain clubs in UK

C. many freshers are worried about how to fit university life

D. most of the students in the UK spend three years in universities

2.Why does the author suggest having wine glasses and snacks handy?

A. To pass the busy university life.

B. To help make friends with other freshers.

C. To show yourself a drinker as others.

D. To enjoy the time in a happy way.

3.The main purpose of the passage is to _______.

A. tell the newcomers how to make a new start in universities

B. introduce something about higher education system of the UK

C. inform the freshers of British social etiquette

D. advise the freshmen how to behave well in the beginning

Advertisement is the difficult business of bringing information to great numbers of people. The purpose of an advertisement is to make people respond to make them react to an idea, such as helping prevent forest fires,or to make them want to buy a certain product or service. At the beginning of the 20th century, advertisement was described as“salesmanship in print”.If this definition were expanded to include radio and television,it would still stand today. The most effective way to sell something is through person-to-person contact. But the cost of person-to-person selling is high because it takes a great deal of time, and it increases the cost of the product or service.Advertising distributes the selling message to many people at one time. The first printed advertisement in the English language appeared in 1278,more than a century before Shakespeare’s first play was produced. This early advertisement was the work of William Caxton,England’s first printer, who used it to advertise religious books from his own workshop Caxton posted small printed notices along London’s main streets.Besides advertising his product,he identified his shop with a red-striped shield(盾形徽章)so that customers could find it easily.

This same sort of simple informational advertising is still used.Examples are the roadside signs that tell travelers that they can buy fresh corn just down the road or that there is a restaurant in the next town.

The Industrial Revolution,in the 18th and 19th centuries, brought a new kind of advertising.Large factories took the place of small workshops and goods were produced in large quantities.

Manufacturers used the newly built railroads to distribute(遞送)their products over wide areas. They had to find many thousands of customers in order to stay in business. They couldn’t simply tell people where shoes or cloth or tea could be bought---they had to learn how to make people want to buy a specific product. Thus modern advertising was born.

Advertising created new markets and helped to raise standards of living as people came to feel that they had a right to new and better products.

1.The passage mainly talks about       .

A、the development of advertisement

B、the first advertisement in the world

C、the difficulty in advertising

D、the advantages of advertisements

2.Why is advertisement accepted by people?

A、Because it can help to prevent forest fires.

B、Because it cand make people want to buy a certain product or service.

C、Because it can bring information to great numbers of people.

D、Because it can help people live longer.

3.Modern advertisement was born as a result of         .

A、the Industrial Revolution

B、the newly built railroads

C、the appearance of the first printer advertisement

D、people’s need

4.We can conclude from the passage that         .

A、red-striped shield is the best thing to use in advertising

B、main streets and television are used in advertising

C、person-to-person selling is the best way in advertising

D、people show little interest in advertisement
