Do you ever have days when everything seems to go wrong? Sarah Rosenbaum does. In fact, last week nothing seemed to go right for her at all…

On Monday her mom and dad were out, so Sarah decided to have a TV dinner. She wanted to switch the oven off at 7: 30 but she was practicing the cello, and it wasn't until 8 o'clock that she suddenly realized: she had forgotten her TV dinner ! She rushed into the kitchen, but it was too late- everything was black.

On Tuesday she offered to clean up the apartment for her parents. After she had vacuumed the carpets, she threw away a pile of old newspapers and computer magazines. The next day, dad asked where they were. He wanted to cut our an article he had seen in one of the computer magazines, and he was furious when he found out that Sarah had thrown them away. On Wednesday she took Foxy for a walk in the park and lost him. She looked for him everywhere, but he had disappeared. The stupid dog came back later, but that was after Mrs Rosenbaum had telephoned nearly everybody in the neighborhood.

Thursday went all right until the evening. Sarah put the dirty things in the dish-washer and switched it on, but when she emptied it later, two of the glasses she had put in were broken. Her mom wasn't very pleased because she always washed the good glasses by hand.

Now it was Friday, and Sarah wanted to go the hamburger drive-in with Nacy, Bob and Mike that evening. But she had already spent her pocket money. Years ago while lying in my hammock(吊床) and drinking JD from the bottle, I noticed my dog dragging something under the fence. Upon looking at it carefully, to my disappointment, I realized it was the next door neighbor's 10-year-old daughter's rabbit. For years I had watched her come home from school and head straight out to its cage, free it and play with it in the yard. I knew today would be not different and feared for our dog, I had to think fast.

The rabbit was quite dirty, as if it had put up quite a struggle, so I washed it off with the plastic pipe, combed it with the dog brush and blew it dry with the leaf blower. Upon finishing its grooming(修飾,打扮), I jumped over the fence and replaced it back in its cage hoping its death would be written as“natural causes”.

Back to the hammock and JD. Within the hour the neighbor's Benz pulled in as usual and out popped the little girl, and as usual she headed straight for the cage. Only this time did she stop about six feet away and screamed:“D-A-D-D-Y!!!”

Her father, panic stricken, stood looking at the cage. Being the good neighbor that I rushed to the fence and asked if there was anything I could do.

Her father less than calmly shouted, “What kind of sick person would dig up a little girl's dead rabbit and put it back in its cage?”

[ ]

A.for the little girl

B.to make the rabbit die naturally

C.that he loved the rabbit as well

D.because it would be thought that he had nothing to do with the rabbit

2.The little girl was shocked ________.

[ ]

A.a(chǎn)t the rabbit's death

B.because of such a clean rabbit

C.that the rabbit was in the cage, dead

D.when she saw her rabbit was still in the cage

3.According to the story, which of the following is not true?

[ ]

A.The girl came home in a car.

B.The dead rabbit was cleaned.

C.The writer pretended not to know the rabbit had died.

D.The father appeared very calm.

4.We can infer from the story that ________.

[ ]

A.the writer was shocked to see her neighbor shocked at the death of the rabbit

B.the writer made a mistake

C.the father and daughter were unhappy to see their rabbit again

D.the father loved his daughter very much

Old-Fashioned Play-For Pay

Kids!Come have a ball!Or 60,000 of them! There’s a new type of business franchise that is appearing in shopping malls and neighborhoods across America offering pay-per-use indoor playgrounds ,which feature toys ,games ,supervised fun and a workout that doesn’t break the family bank.

As public playgrounds grow increasingly worn and dirty, the for-profit centers offer clean, safe supervised activity as well as a variety of challenging exercises to develop youngsters’ physical fitness, usually for a fee of around 5$ an hour.“Playgrounds are dirty ,not supervised,” says Dick Guggenheimer ,owner of the two-month-old Discovery Zone in Yonkers, N.Y., part of Kansas City-based chain, “We are indoors; we are padded(鋪上軟墊);parents can feel their child is safe”.

In order to satisfy the need of two-earner families ,the new franchise stayed open in the evenings ,long after traditional public playgrounds have grown dark and unusable. However these new playgrounds are not meant to be day-care centers.Parents are expected go stay and play with their kids rather than drop them off.But several also provide high-tech baby-sitting services. At some of the Discovery Zones, parents can register their children in special supervised programs, then leave them and slip away for a couple of hours to enjoy a movie or dinner. If there is a problem ,Mom and Dad are called.

The most fun of all, though, is getting to do what parents used to do in the days before two-earner families and two-hour commutes; play with their kids. That ,at least ,is old-fashioned, even at per-hour rates.

A.

The fast development of Discovery Zone.

B.

The disadvantages of outdoor playgrounds.

B.

C.

It doesn’t allow parents to leave their kids.

D.

It’s a place where parents can play together with their kids.

(3)

[ ]

A.

B.

The new playground is also enjoyed by old people.

C.

The new playground is actually enjoyed by parents.

D.

The new playground offers a fashion which is poplar in the past.

As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mill carrier, and
on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure:
There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad
did.
In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when 1 was a boy it was such a fun to
stick y our finger 'through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck on your fingers.
On Dad' s final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least
one member from each family was waiting at their mailbox to thank him for his friendship and his years
of service. "Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route." he used to say, "and a story at every
one. " One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail in to her every day because she was nearly blind.
Once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills.
Mailboxes were sometimes used for things other than mail. One note left in a mailbox read. "Nat, take
these eggs to Marian; she's baking a cake and doesn't have any eggs. " Mailboxes might be buried in the
snow, or broken, or lying on the groom:. bat the mail was always delivered On cold days Dad might find
one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate. A young wrote letters but had no
stamps, so she left a few button on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps. One
businessman used to leave large amounts of cash in his mailbox for Dad to take to the bank. Once, the
amount came to 8 32,000.
A dozen years ago, when I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad's death,  the
mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn't
the case.
As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was
around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green
and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.
I made a turn at the comer and drove past the post office and across the railroad tracks to our house. Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table when I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank
Townsend, Dad's postmaster and great friend for many years. So we all sat down at the table and began
to tell stories.
At one point Frank looked at me with tears in his eyes. " What are we going to do about the letters
this Christmas?" he asked.
     "The letters?"
'I guess you never knew. "
     "Knew what?"
" Remember, when you were a kid and you used to put your letters to Santa in those green and red
boxes on Main Street? It was your dad who answered all those letters every year. "
I just sat there with tears in my eyes. It wasn't hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old table in
our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the
people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were
that Santa had known so much about their homes and families.
For me, just knowing that story about my father was the gift of a lifetime.

A. Dad had a strong sense of duty
B. Dad was an honest and reliable man

3. According to the passage, which of the following impressed the writer most?
A. Dad read letters for a blind lady for years.
