We use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people, finding information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There’s no real word for it yet, so we’ll call it e-talk. People don’t like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:

BTW(by the way);  BRB(be right back);  LOL(laughing out loud);  IMO(in my opinion)

People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:

info(information);   puter(computer);    pic(picture);     sec(second)

We ususally don’t see people when we communicate on the Internet, so people have new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keyboards to draw “feelings”, such as:

:-) (happy);     ;-)(joking);        :-((sad);       :-O(surprised)

These days, many forums(論壇)have picture feelings. For example:

(happy)              (sad)               (angry)               (cool)

There are even whole new words, like ”newbie’s” (someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it’s called “flaming” the person.

It takes time for people to get used to e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own special ways of communicating. Newbie’s sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.

1.Why do people type acronyms?

A. To show their feelings.      B. To make jokes.

C. To save time.                D. In this way newbie’s won’t understand them.

2.What does “BTW, my computer is not working well, :-( ”mean?

A.The person is happy about getting a new computer.

B. The person has to go away from his/her computer.

C. The person is angry at somebody.

D. The person is sad that his computer is having problems.

3. If someone is angry, what may he type?

A.      B. BRB          C. LOL        D.

4.E-talk will probably_______.

A. keep changing                       B. stay the same

C. be used by people on the telephone       D. be easy for newbie’s to understand.

When the musical sound rings you, you immediately reach for your pocket ready to have a chat. But although you probably use it all the time, have you ever stopped to think about the manners related to talking on the phone? If you haven’t, here are some tips to guide you.

●Always give the person you are calling plenty of time to get to the phone before you hang up.If the person who answers is not the one you want, give your name and ask if you may speak to the person you want.

●Think about the time you call people.Try not to call too early in the morning(before about 9:00)or too late at night(after about 9:30).Also try not to call at mealtimes.

●If you go by plane to visit your relatives at Christmas, remember to follow airline instructions.Cell phones must be turned off as soon as the plane doors are closed and remain so until the doors open again on arrival.

●When face to face with someone, do not talk on the phone. It is rude to be on the phone when a waiter is trying to take your order in a restaurant, or when you are returning the shoes you have just been trying on in a shop.Finish any face-to-face business before taking a call.Continuing to use the phone while nodding to the person in front of you is quite impolite.

●When in a restaurant with your friends, keep phone conversations short.Make a call only if it is important.Practise speaking in a low voice. If no one looks your way, you’ve got it

●If you go to a theatre, a concert or a cinema, consider the other people around you.Check that your phone is “off” before you enter. If you are expecting a very important call, put your phone on “vibrate”(振動)and run for the exit as soon as you feel it.If you forget both “off” and “vibrate” and your phone rings, don’t answer it, turn it off straight away.

Which is true according to the passage above?

A.You may call people anytime as you like.

B.You may talk loudly on the phone at dinner in the restaurant.

C.You may keep on talking on the phone while greeting somebody.

D.You may call people as soon as you get on the plane, but not after the doors are closed.

We may infer from these tips that__________.

A.some people don’t pay much attention to manners while making cell phone calls

B.you may ask to leave a message unless the person you are calling is in

C.calling people too early or too late in the morning is not polite

D.almost everyone has got a cell phone

What does the underlined sentence “…you’ve got it” mean in the passage?

A.You have succeeded in making a call without disturbing others.

B.You have made the phone call brief and interesting.

C.You’ve got the message you are waiting for.

D.You have made a phone call secretly.

From the tips given above, we can decide the writer is sure to share the opinion that______.

A.1ike the saying “clothes make a man”, nowadays cell phones make a man

B.as the old saying goes, money talks; nowadays cell phones talk

C.the way we use the cell phones tells what we are like

D.we are what cell phones we use

Have you ever heard the saying “All roads lead to Rome”? At one time, this was pretty much true. During the Roman Empire, lots of roads were built in order to move armies, send messages by courier (信使), and make trade easier. This construction work went on for five centuries! If all the roads built during the Roman Empire were put together end to end, they would circle the equator twice.

The network of Roman roads was begun in 312 BC. It was demanded that the roads be built strong so that they would not fall down. Roman soldiers, supervised (監督) by engineers, laid down the roads in a special pattern of layers. The first layer was made of sand. Next, the builders added rocks and rubble. On top of these materials came gravel. On this solid foundation, the road builders placed paving stones.

Also, Roman roads were cambered. This means that they were built higher in the middle than on the edges, allowing rainwater to run off, which prevented flooding. We use the same technique in building roads today. The Romans also laid out roads over hills when necessary, setting them down in a zigzag pattern to make the road rise gradually.

All Roman roads had milestones (里程碑), placed every thousands paces (a Roman mile). The milestones told when the road was built, who was emperor at the time, the road’s destination, how far the traveler was from the destination, and how many miles had been traveled since the beginning of the road. This information was a great help to travelers.

Because of their excellence in construction, it really is no surprise that many parts of Roman road still exist today. These roadways are one of the most impressive accomplishments of the Roman Empire.

42. What does the underlined sentence in the first paragraph mean?

 A. The Roman Empire was very powerful.

 B. Lots of roads were built during the Roman Empire.

C. The roads built during the Roman Empire were very long.

 D. The roads built during the Roman Empire were very convenient.

43. Which of the following correctly shows the structure of the Roman roads?

      A.                                                B.

        C.                                         D.

44. The following description about Roman roads is true EXCEPT _____.

A. Roman roads were built by the Roman soldiers directed by the engineers

B. Roman roads could prevent flooding using the technique abandoned today

C. Roman roads had milestones that were placed every other Roman mile

D. Roman roads still exist today as an impressive achievement of Roman Empire

45. What information can you find on the milestones?

A. The builders of the road.                                   B. The materials used in building roads.

C. The distance from one city.                               D. The time spent in building roads.

46. The passage mainly ______.

A. explains the saying “All roads lead to Rome”

閱讀下列短文,請根據每段文章的內容從短文前面的方框中選出代表其段落主旨的最佳選項符號填入相應的空白處。選項中有一項為多余選項。

A. Responding to emotions.

B. Emotions and memory.

C. Emotions and your brain.

D. What emotions are.

E. How good it feels to be understood!

F. How we can be happy.

1.

Everyone feels happiness, surprise, fear, sadness and anger at some time—these are the basic emotions. It’s normal to have these feelings sometimes! There are over 600 words in English to describe them and we use the muscles(肌肉) in our faces to express them.

2.

Emotions enable us to react to situations—for example, anger will set your heart racing, and feeling happy will make you smile. One of the key areas of your brain that deals with showing, recognizing, and controlling the body’s reaction to emotions is known as the limbic system (中樞邊緣系統).

3.

When remembering an emotional event, you recall not only what happened, but also how you felt. Both sorts of memory can be caused by something you heard, saw and even smelt, at the time. Scientists think that you store early emotional memories, even if you can’t remember what actually happened.

4.

Taking the time to recognize, understand, and express how we feel is the right thing to do. When we are able to express our emotions properly, we think hand act in a better way. We have better relationships with our parents, family and friends. We understand ourselves, and others understand us. And it feels so good!

5.

The way we feel affects our thoughts and actions, and it is impossible to separate our feelings from the things we think and do! Therefore, it is important to be aware of our feeling and to respond to them in the right way. Feelings like anger and fear are not our enemies! We should not keep them deep inside. Instead, we should understand them and direct them in the proper way.

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediate liking to a person you have just met? We often get the first impression of a people based on the color of a person’s skin or the manner in which he or she dressed. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal languages but also by nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviors.

Nonverbal communication is important because we use the actions of others to learn about their affective emotional states .Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face, and eyes—be it fear, joy, anger, or sadness—so we can express them without ever saying a word .For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes.

Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception(感知) of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and sexual partners is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication.

Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture-related. It is based on different beliefs, religions, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display his or her specific nonverbal behaviors is greatly affected by culture and context. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behavior is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries for man to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another.
