As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease—especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious (有營(yíng)養(yǎng)的) foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.

The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely “not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body’s special needs. Both types have simply been called “well”. In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellness” only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a point of monitoring their body’s condition. Most important, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap (缺陷) may be “well” in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. “Wellness” may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.

3.D

4.B

5.C

根據(jù)第一段“the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease—especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors”(當(dāng)今社會(huì)醫(yī)療保健的重點(diǎn)已經(jīng)從治愈疾病向預(yù)防疾病轉(zhuǎn)變了,特指改變我們?cè)S多的不健康的行為。)故選C。

根據(jù)“This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.”(這個(gè)人沒(méi)有生病,也沒(méi)有生病的危險(xiǎn),但是他還可以過(guò)得更健康一點(diǎn)。) 故選A。

根據(jù)The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely “not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body’s special needs.”(傳統(tǒng)醫(yī)學(xué)界沒(méi)有就“不生病”和“身體健康”做出明確的區(qū)分,只是關(guān)注身體的各項(xiàng)機(jī)能而已。)

根據(jù)“some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellness” only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. ”一些健康專家開始把“健康”和“健康狀態(tài)”定義為一種積極追求的理想狀態(tài),即保持并改善健康的狀態(tài)。詞匯題。對(duì)于“健康”給出的新的定義,即不是一種人們可以達(dá)到的狀態(tài),而是一種努力追求的理想,因此選B。

5.推理判斷題。根據(jù)“in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations.

A single night of taking the drug Ecstasy(搖頭丸)can cause serious brain damage and speed up the start of Parkinson's disease, scientists say.Just two or three Ecstasy tablets can permanently destroy brain cells that affect movement and reasoning, according to American research that links the drug to Parkinson's for the first time.

A study by a team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, involving squirrel monkeys and baboons(狒狒)found that both species suffered permanent damage to key cells, which are lost in Parkinson's, after receiving three low doses(劑量)of Ecstasy at three-hour periods.

The study is particularly important because baboons are one of the best animal models for the human brain.George Ricaurte, who led the research, said that the widespread abuse of drug might have caused severe damage.“The most troubling result is that young adults using Ecstasy may be increasing their risk of developing Parkinsonism as they get older.”

Alan Leshner, a former director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse, said,“This study emphasizes the multi-aspect damage that Ecstasy causes to users. We've long known that repeated use damages brain cells. But this study shows that even very occasional use can have long-lasting effects on many different brain systems. It sends an important message to young people:don't experiment with your own brain.”

Janet Betts, a mother whose teenage daughter Leah died after a single Ecstasy tablet in 1995, said,“This comes as no surprise. But people can't see the effects at first, and they say it won't happen to them. We'll see the symptoms later, just as we have with smoking.”

may bring on Parkinson's at once

(3)

Why are squirrel monkeys and baboons involved in the experiments?

[ ]

A.

Because their brain is similar to human being's.

B.

Because these animals usually take drugs.

C.

Because these animals will soon get well after the experiment.

D.

Because there is a model in the animals' brains.

(4)

The underlined word“This”in the last paragraph probably means that ________.

[ ]

A.

Leah died after a single Ecstasy tablet in 1995

B.

taking drug has the same symptoms as smoking

The journey to the moon had been the first step toward future exploration(探險(xiǎn)) in space. The distance between the Moon and Earth is very short indeed when compared with the distances between Earth and the other planets. Mars, the nearest planet to Earth is millions of miles away. Traveling to the planets will be man’s next aim. Such travels will be more challenging than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous.
Recently, two American spaceships, Vikings 1 and 2, landed on Mars trying to discover whether that planet has any life on it. So far the signs of life on Mars has neither confirmed(確認(rèn)) nor ruled out. Russians have discovered that the surface of Venus(金星) is so hot that it is almost certain that there is no life there. Also the atmosphere of Venus is extremely dense(稠) and the pressure is nearly a hundred times greater than that of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Scientists believe man may find planets which have the same conditions as those we have on Earth , but man should realize Earth will be his only home for a long time and begin to love and care for it.
63. According to the passage, traveling to the planets will be ________.
A.  much easier and even more interesting  B.  far more exciting and dangerous
C.  man’s final aim                    D.  man’s first step
64. Which of the following is Not true?
A.  Mars is nearer to the earth than the moon.
B.  The moon is much nearer to the earth than Mars.
C.  Of all the planets, Mars is the nearest to the earth.
D.  All the planets are much farther to the earth.
65. From the passage, we can guess_____.
A.  there is life on Mars
B.  there is no life on Mars
C.  the atmosphere of Mars is not so dense as that of Venus
D.  scientists will have little hope to find the answers
66. Man can live on under the conditions of _______.
A.  much too hot surface                   B.  the same pressure as we get on earth
C.  normal atmosphere as we have on earth     D.  both B and C

D
Around the globe, the tourist trade is booming and you are promised to enjoy all the comfort and convenience of modern tourism. The first-class systems of communication by air, sea and land make it possible for us to visit each other’s countries at a moderate cost. What was once the ‘grand tour’, reserved for only the very rich, is now within most people’s grasp. The package tour and chartered flights (包機(jī)) are quite popular to us. Modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort which those on grand tours in the old days couldn’t have dreamed of. With all this coming and going, you would expect greater understanding to develop between the nations of the world. Not a bit of it! So what’s the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the world remain basically ignorant of each other? So there is a great misdirection in tourist business, especially in conducted tour items.
Many tourist organizations are directly responsible for this state of affairs. They purposely set out to “protect” their passengers from too much contact with the local population. Modern tourists lead a protected and separated life. They live at international hotels, where they eats their international food and sips their international drink while gazing at the natives from a distance. Designed tours to places of interest are carefully arranged. The tourists are allowed to see only what the organizers want them to see and no more. A strict schedule makes it impossible for the tourists to wander off on their own; and anyway, language is always a barrier, so they might only be too happy to be protected in this way.
At its very worst, this merely leads to a new and terrible kind of colonization. The sad thing about this situation is that it leads to the persistence of certain old ideas of other nations and countries. We don’t see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we have been brought up to believe what they are, even staying along with that from text books during our schooling.
You can test this for yourself. Take five nationalities, say, French, German, English, American and Italian. Now in your mind, match them with these five adjectives: musical, emotional, cold, pedantic (愛(ài)追究的), native. Far from providing us with any insight into the national characteristics of the peoples just mentioned, these adjectives just actually act as barriers, for we can’t do the job with certainty. So, frequently, when you set out on your travels, the only characteristics you notice are those which confirm what you have already obtained as the first conceptions in your mind. And you get home only with the highly unoriginal and inaccurate impression, such as the saying, “Anglo-Saxons are hypocrites (偽君子)” and “Latin peoples shout a lot ”. However, to gain the real understanding, you only have to make a few foreign friends and you will know how ridiculousridiculous ridiculous ridiculous and harmful some old conceptions of other nations are. But how can you make foreign friends when the tourist trade does its best to prevent you?
Being carried to an extreme, stereotypes can be positively dangerous. A very wild and limited outlook may stir up racial hatred and blind us to the basic fact — how reasonless it sounds! – that all people are human. We are all similar to each other, while at the same time all unique.
