Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent—child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue int0 adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”

But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.

“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the  ‘a(chǎn)fter’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

A. interest

A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.

B. Parents put more trust in their children’s abilities.

C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs.

D. Parents share more interests with their children.

43. The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _________.

A. more confusion among parents

B. new equality between parents and children

C.1ess respect for parents from children

D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents

44. By saying “today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘a(chǎn)fter’ side.” the author means that today’s parents _________.

A. follow the trend of the change

B. can set a limit to the change

D. have little difficulty adjusting to the change

45. The purpose of the passage is to _________.

More teachers are starting off the school year with letters to parents and students to introduce themselves and set a tone (基調(diào)) for the year. The letters are a good way to start positive communication with parents, several teachers told Education World

“I think it’s professional (專業(yè)的),”said Dorothy Peselli, an English teacher at Sparta High School in Sparta, New Jersay, Peselli, who gives out the letters the first day of school, told Education World.“It gives parents an image of you as a professional. If you start communication off in a positive manner, you will have the parents on your side when you need them.”

In her letter to parents, Peselli encourages them to call or e-mail her with specific concerns about their children.“I want to work as a team to make sure that your child becomes an independent lifelong learner,” Peselli wrote to parents last September. She also telephones the parents of all her students at the beginning of the year.

Peselli includes with the letter a classroom handbook (手冊)listing plans and rules .And she requires that both parents and students read and sign statements (included in the letter!) that they read the handbook. The student letter also lists needed supplies and gives encouragement.“Please come to class ready to work and learn. This will be an exciting year for all of us,” it says

Last year, Peselli taught at a different high school and parents there were “shocked”, but appreciative, that she had so much contact with them,“I received roses and a thank-you note from one boy and his mother”.Peselli said. She wished her own children’s teachers would take the time to write notes as well.“I never got a letter home from any of my daughter’s high school teachers.” she said, “It would be nice to know the background of some of the people who are teaching my daughter.”

We may learn from the text that

A.most teachers are writing letters to parents and students

B.the handbook is used to list supplies and give encouragement

C.Peselli believe it important for teachers to exchange information with parents

D.Peselli mainly introduces her background and teaching experiences in the letters

The underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refers to

A.the handbook               B.the requirement

C.the school             D.the letter

We can infer from the last paragraph that

A.parents were satisfied with Peselli’s way of working

B.Peselli means to surprise parents by writing students

C.Peselli seemed to be popular among boy students

D.a(chǎn)ll Peselli’s children are studying in high schools

The purpose of the text is to

A.introduce an English teaching method

B.give advice on how to teach students

C.encourage teachers to keep in touch with parents

D.show us how Dorothy Peselli makes teaching plans

科目:高中英語 來源:2013-2014學(xué)年河南省鄭州市高三上學(xué)期第六次調(diào)考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination and physical, cognitive (認(rèn)知的), and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. Play allows children to create and explore a world they can master, conquering their fears while practicing adult roles. Undirected play allows children to learn how to work in groups, to share, to negotiate, and to resolve conflicts.

??? Ideally, much of play involves adults, but when play is controlled by adults, children acquiesce (順從) to adult rules and concerns and lose some of the benefits play offers them, particularly in developing creativity, leadership, and group skills. In contrast to passive entertainment, play builds active, healthy bodies. In fact, it has been suggested that encouraging unstructured play may be an exceptional way to increase physical activity levels in children, which is one important strategy in the resolution of the obesity problem.

??? Children’s development is critically influenced by appropriate, affective relationships with loving and consistent caregivers as they relate to children through play. When parents observe their children in play or join with them in child-driven play, they are given a unique opportunity to see the world from their children’s vantage point as the child navigates a world perfectly created just to fit his or her needs. The interactions that occur through play tell children that parents are fully paying attention to them and help to build enduring relationships. Parents who have the opportunity to look at their children’s world learn to communicate more effectively with their children and are given another setting to offer guidance. Less verbal children may be able to express their views, giving their parents an opportunity to gain a fuller understanding of their perspective. Quite simply, play offers parents a wonderful opportunity to engage fully with their children.

??? Play is essential to the academic environment. It ensures that the school setting attends to the social and emotional development of children as well as their cognitive development. It has been shown to help children adjust to the school setting and even to strengthen children’s learning willingness. Social-emotional learning is best integrated (融合) with academic learning; it is concerning if some of the forces that enhance children’s ability to learn are improved at the expense of others. Play and unscheduled time that allow for peer interactions are important components of social-emotional learning.

1.Compared with undirected play, play which is controlled by adults ________.

A. doesn’t benefit the children at all

B. doesn’t help develop leadership and group skills

C. makes children become more active

D. helps increase physical activity levels

2.The third paragraph mainly tells us that ________.

A. play offers parents a good chance to establish good relationships with children

B. children’s development is greatly influenced by relationships with parents

C. play helps children better express their views

D. play offers parents a unique opportunity to see the world from a different perspective

3.From the last paragraph, we know that ________.

A. play can’t help children become adapted to the school setting

B. play makes social-emotional learning and academic learning separated

C. play is beneficial to social-emotional learning as well as academic learning

D. it is necessary to strengthen children’s academic development at the expense of others

4.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Undirected play can help children develop team spirit.

B. Play can improve children’s willingness to learn.

C. Play helps adults gain a better understanding of the children’s thoughts.

D. Adults shouldn’t be involved in children’s play.

科目:高中英語 來源:2012年北師大版高中英語選修一Unit15練習(xí)卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Children are getting so fat that they may be the first generation to die before their parents, an expert says.

Today's young people will be affected by potential (潛在的) killers such as heart disease because of their weight. Fatty fast-food diets combined with the lifestyles with televisions and computers could mean kids will die young, says Professor Andrew Prentice, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. At the same time, the shape of the human body is going through a great change because adults are getting so fat.

Here in Britain, the latest research shows that the average waist size for a man is 36~38 inches and may be 42~44 inches by 2032.This compares with only 32.6 inches in 1972. Women's waists have grown from an average of 22 inches in the 1920s to 24 inches in the 1950s and 30 inches now. One of the major reasons why children now are at greater risk is that we are getting fatter younger. In the UK alone, more than one million under 16 years old are thought

to be overweight or fat—double the number in the 1980s. One in ten of four-year-olds are also medically said to be obese.

The obesity which started in the US, has now spread to Europe, Australia, Central America and the Middle East. Many nations now record more than 20 percent of their population as obese and well over half of the population as overweight.

Professor Prentice says the change in our shape has been caused by high-energy foods combined with a dramatic (急劇的) drop in the energy we use as a result of technology developments.

He is not alone in his concern. Only last week one medical magazine revealed how obesity was fuelling a rise in cancer cases. Obesity also increases the risk factor for heart disease and so on. An averagely obese person's lifespan (壽命) is shortened by around nine years while a seriously obese person by much more.

Professor Prentice says,

“So_will_parents_live_longer_than_their_children,_as_an_American_obesity_expert_said_recently?”

“The answer is yes—and no.” Yes, when most children become obese. No, because this is now becoming an alarmingly serious problem in the US. “Such children will have a greatly reduced quality of life on both body and mind.”

So say “No” to sandwiches and hamburgers.

1.From the second paragraph, we know that ________.

A.heart disease is caused by people's weight

B.bad living habits make children die young

C.increasing weight could kill young people

D.a(chǎn)dults know how to change their shape of body

2.According to Professor Prentice, people become fatter because ________.

A.the energy people take in is more than they need

B.high technology makes people use less energy

C.food contains too much energy

D.people like to eat fast food

3.For the underlined question, the answer “no” suggests ________.

A.children should refuse fast-food diets

B.children's obesity is becoming more and more serious

C.Americans have realized the bad consequence of the obesity

D.the government should call on fat people to lose weight as soon as possible
