June came and the hay was almost ready for cutting, On Midsummer's Eve, which was s Saturday, Mr Jones went into Willington and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back till midday on Sunday. The men had milked the cows in the early morning and then had gone out rabbiting , without bothering(操心) to feed the animals . When Mr Jones got back he immediately went to sleep on the livingroom sofa with the “News of the World” over his face, so that when evening came, the animals were still not fed . At last, they could stand no longer. One of the cows broke in the door of the storehouse with her horns (角) and all the animals began to help themselves to the grains . It was just then that Mr Jones woke up. The next moment he and his four men were in the storehouse with whips in their hands, whipping in all directions. This was more than the hungry animals could bear. Together, though nothing of the kind had been planned beforehand, they jumped upon their masters. Jones and his men suddenly found themselves being butted (頂撞) and kicked from all sides . The situation was quite out of their control . They had never seen animals act like this before, and this sudden uprising of creatures whom they were used to beating and whipping just as they chose, frightened them. Raising pets is not a new thing in China, but recently it has taken on a new meaning.

A famous Chinese saying, “wan wu sang zhi”has it that riding a hobby destroys one's will to make progress. The saying had been so popular that even today many people still consider raising pets as a hobby of the idle (游手好閑)。

Pet food is sold in almost all supermarkets and many specialty stores for getting needs have been established.

But I have neither time. nor money to raise them. ”said Li Jun. in her 40' s a civil servant from Beijing.

The cost of raising a dog is high in Beijing, where registration (登記)is a must for all dogs and costs 5 , 000 yuan for each animal. In addition, pet owners must pay for regular injection of Vaccines(疫苗). Most of all, dog food is quite expensive.

Unlike his mother, Li Jun' s 10 -year -old son, Li Qiyu, dreams of the day he will have his own pet.“I hope I can have a dog in my house. ” he said.

In a few years, you might be able to speak Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, and English-andall at the same time. This sounds incredible, but Alex Waibel, a computer science professor at US's Car-negie Mellon University(CMU)and Germany's University of Karlsruhe, announced last week that it may soon be reality. He and his team have invented software and hardware that could make it far easier forpeople who speak different languages to understand each other.

One application, called Lecture Translation, can easily translate a speech from one language into an-other.Current translation technologies typically limit speakers to certain topics or a limited vocabulary.Us-ers also have to be trained how to use the programme.

Another machine can send translations of a speech to different listeners depending on what languagethey speak.“It is like having a simultaneous translator right next to you but without disturbing the person next to you, ”Waibel said

Prefer to read? So- called Translation Glasses transcribe(轉錄)the translations on a tiny liquid-crystal display(LCD)screen.

Then there's the Muscle Translator.Electrodes capture the electrical signals from facial muscle movements made naturally when a person is mouthing words. The signals are then translated into speech. The electrodes could be replaced with wireless chips implanted in a person's face, according to research-ers.

During a demonstration held last Thursday in CMU's Pittsburgh campus, a Chinese student named Sang Jun had 11 tiny electrodes attached to the muscles of his cheeks, neck and throat. Then he mouthed-without speaking aloud- a few words in Mandarin(普通話)to the audience.A few seconds later, the phrase was displayed on a computer screen and spoken out by the computer in English and Spanish:“Let me introduce our new prototype.”

This particular instrument, when fully developed, might allow anyone to speak in any number of lan-guages or, as Waibel put it, “to switch your mouth to a foreign language”.“The idea behind the universi-ty's prototypes is to create'good enough' bridges for cross- cultural exchanges that are becoming more common in the world, ”Waibel said.

With spontaneous(自發的)translators, foreign drivers in Germany could listen to traffic warnings on the radio; tourists in China could read all the signs and talk with local people; leaders of different coun-tries could have secret talks without any interpreters there.
