Homework is a great way for kids to develop independent, lifelong learning skills, so here are some general homework tips for parents:
    ● Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.
Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going.
    ● Make sure the materials your child needs, such as some paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available.
Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance.
    ● Help your child with time management.
Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don't let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.
   ● Be positive about homework.
Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.
    ● When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers.
Giving answers means your child will not learn the material. Too much help teaches your child that when the going gets rough, someone will do the work for him or her.
Cooperation with the teacher. It shows your child that the school and home are a team. Follow the directions given by the teacher.
   ● Reward progress in homework.
If your child has been successful in homework completion and is working hard, celebrate that success with a special even (e.g. pizza, a walk, a trip to the park) to reinforce the positive effort

We can achieve knowledge either actively or passivelr(被動地). We achieve it actively by
direct experience,by testing and piroving an idea,or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someoneelse. Most of the learning that
takes place in the classroom and thekind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers
ormagazines is passive. Conditioned as we are to passive leaning,it'snot surprising that we
depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we
are told even when it is little more than hear say and rumor(謠言).
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one personwrites down a message but
doesn' t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it,word for word, to another person. That
person, inturn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the peopleplaying the game. The
last person writes down the message word forword as he or she hears it. Then the two written
statements arec ompared. Typically, the original message has changed.
That' s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that peoplerepeat a story in their own words
changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own
creativetouch to a story, trying to improve on it,stamping(打上標記)it with their own personal
style. Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors:Astatement of opinion by one writer
may be re-stated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another;and this process
may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts onwhich the origihal writer based
his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.
1. According to the passage, passive learning may occur in______.
A. doing a medical experiment
B. solving a math problem
C.visiting an exhibition
D.doing scientific reasoning
2. The underlined word"it"in Paragraph 2 refers to________.
A.active learning
B. knowledge
C. communication
D. passive learning
3. The author mentions the game Rumor to show that_________.
A. a message may be changed when being passed on
B. a message should be delivered in different ways
C. people may have problems with their sense of hearing
D. people tend not to believe in what they know as rumor
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Active learning is less important.
B. Passive learning may not be reliable.
C. Active learning occurs more frequently.
D. Passive learning is not found among scholars.

The plan: turn Mars into a blue world with streams and green fields, and then fill it with creatures(生物) from the earth. This idea may sound like something from a science fiction (科幻小說), but it is actually
being taken seriously by many researchers.
This suggested future for the "red planet" will be the main topic for discussion at an international
conference hosted by NASA (美國宇航局) this week. Leading researchers as well as science fiction
writers will attend the event. It comes as NASA is preparing a multibilliondollar Mars research
programme. "Turning Mars into a little earth has long been a topic in science fiction," said Dr Michael
Meyer, NASA's senior scientist for astrobiology (太空生物學). "Now, with scientists exploring the
reality, we can ask what are the real possibilities of changing Mars."
Most scientists agree that Mars could be turned into a little earth, although much time and money
would be needed to achieve this goal.
But many experts are shocked by the idea.“We are destroying our own world at an unbelievable
speed and now we are talking about ruining another planet, ” said Paul Murdin, of the Institute of
Astronomy, Cambridge, UK. Over the past months, scientists have become increasingly confident they
will find Martian life forms.Europe and America's robot explorers have found proof that water, mixed
with soil, exists in large amounts on the planet.
In addition, two different groups of scientistsannounced on March 28 that they had found signs of
methane (甲烷) in the Martian atmosphere (大氣). The gas is a waste product of living creatures and
could be produced by microbes (微生物) living in the red planet's soil.
But scientists such as Dr Lisa Pratt, a biologist at Indiana University, say that these microbes will be
put in danger by the little earth project. "Before we have even discovered if there is life on Mars, we are
talking about carrying out projects that would destroy all these native life forms, all the strange microbes
that we hope to find buried in the soil,"  said Dr Pratt. This view is shared by Monica Grady, a planetary
scientist at the Natural History Museum, London. "We cannot risk starting a global experiment that would wipe out the precious information we are looking for." she said, "This is just wrong."
1. The passage is about________.
A. a plan turning Mars into a little earth
B. the necessity of changing Mars
C. Mars supporting life
D. finding water in the Mars
2. Which of the following is NOT the reason why some scientists are against the plan?
A. The project would wipe out all the native life forms on the Mars.
B. The project will cost too much money and work.
C. We would ruin Mars.
D. We are destroying our own world at an unbelievable speed.
3. We can infer from the passage that________.
A. water is a crucial factor for life
B. the project will have little effect on the native life forms supposed to live on the Mars
C. Monica Grady is in favour of carrying out the little earth project
D. the idea turning Mars into a little earth is nothing but a science fiction
4. Which of the following supports the conclusion of microbes living in the Mars soil?
A. Scientists found liquid water in the Mars.
B. Scientists found signs of methane in the Martian atmosphere.
C. Scientists found a lot of good soil on the Mars.
D. Scientists found some creatures living on the Mars.

I'm usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or
unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these
statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck
by a report which concluded that today's children are significantly more anxious than children in
the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of
anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.
Why are America's kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical
isolation(隔離) brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other
things and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.
Considering that we_can't_turn_the_clock_back,_adults can still do plenty to help the next generation.
At the top of the list is nurturing(培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No
child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against
stress.
To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers.
Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for facetoface relationships, and they will
get more sleep.
Limit the amount of virtual(虛擬的) violence your children are exposed to. It's not just video
games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.
Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended
Harvard or Yale.
Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide
a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn't have to ruin your life.
1. According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as
mentally ill 50 years ago ________.
A. probably suffered less from anxiety
B. were considered less individualistic
C. were less isolated physically
D. were probably less selfcentered
2. What does the author mean by saying "we can't turn the clock back" in the third paragraph?
A. It's impossible to forget the past.
B. The social reality children are facing cannot be forgotten.
C. It's impossible to slow down the pace of change.
D. Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.
3. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people's state of mind are ________.
A. illogical
B. confusing
C. surprising
D. questionable
4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. To children, anxiety is completely avoidable.
B. TV and computer play an important role in isolating children from the real world.
C. Exercise does not help to lessen children's anxiety.
D. Sometimes local news about crime and murder also affects children a little.
5. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is________.
A. to lower their expectations for them
B. to set a good model for them to follow
C. to get them more involved socially
D. to improve them with a safer environment

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation,
you are wrong.Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a
language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an
increase in your brain power.Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey
matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that
exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater the younger people learn a second language.A
team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons
who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt
a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in
people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new
language,the smaller the difference.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning
a second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between
bilingualism and math skill."Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes
the brain more flexible," he said."You are actually going beyond language and have a better
understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a
second language between the ages of 2 and 34.Reading,writing,and comprehension were all tested.
The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better."Studying a language means you
get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.
1.The main subject talked about in this passage is __________.
A.science on learning a second language
B.man's ability of learning a second language
C.language can help brain power
D.language learning and math study
2.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions "exercise" in order to _________.?
A.say language is also a kind of physical labor
B.prove that one needs more practice when he/she is learning a language
C.to show the importance of using the language when you learn the language
D.make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well
3.The underlined word "bilingual" probably means __________.
A.a researcher on language learning
B.a second language learner
C.a person who can speak two languages
D.an active language learner
4.We may know from the scientific findings that ___________.
A.the earlier you start to learn a second language the higher the grey matter density is
B.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn't know a second
language
C.the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people's brain
D.the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time
5.In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that _________.
A.learning a second language is the same as studying math
B.early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in study other subjects
C.Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
D.you'd better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language
