There are a number of advantages when it comes to living alone. However, it also comes with a few safety concerns. You still never know who will be around the corner. Don't become another victim; be sure to follow our tips.
     1. All doors should be kept locked.
Always keep your doors locked when you are in your apartment or dorm. Make sure the doors are closed behind you when you come into the building and never leave your room unlocked, even when you are in it. There's always a chance that someone might sneak in while you are unaware. Always try to remember to close doors behind you to ensure your safety.
     2. Don't lose your keys.
Even if you do everything you can to keep the doors locked, criminals might still be able to come into your house with a key. Always know where your keys are to prevent this. Never put them down in a public place or give them to friends. Also, before you bring your car into the repair shop, take off the house keys.
     3. When it comes to safety, standing up for yourself is important.
If you aren't getting all the security features you want, don't be afraid to ask. If your lighting situation is less than ideal, discuss this with your supervisor or landlord. Talk to the campus security organization if you think a security phone near your dorm is a good idea. Request that the building employ someone to monitor those entering and leaving the building. You should feel safe where you reside (居住于), so stand up for your rights.
     4. Be careful.
You still might find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. Check your peephole (窺視孔) before letting anyone in. Whenever you witness something around your building that makes you uncomfortable or suspicious just dial 911. It is a good idea to always walk with a friend instead of alone. Become familiar with people who live in the building, so you can keep track of anyone that is a stranger.

People who travel long distances will have to decide whether they would prefer to go by land,
sea or air.Maybe nobody would say they enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours. The
train will soon get crowded and dirty. It is almost impossible to take your mind off the joumey.
Reading may help you to kill time but soon the clicking on the rails will bring you to sleep. During
the day, sleep never lasts long. At night, when you really wish to go to sleep, you find you can hardly
manage to do so. If you are lucky to get a sleeping seat, you spend half the night looking at the small
blue light over your head, and when you finally arrive at the station, you are
so tired that you don't want to leave.
Long car joumeys are even less pleasant, for it is impossible even to read. On motorways, you
can, at least, travel fairly safely at high speeds, but more often, the greater part of the joumey is spent
on narrow, bumpy (崎嶇不平的)  roads which are crowded with traffic.
When travelling by sea,you have a different expe- rience. You can have a walk.on the board,
play games, swim, meet interesting people and enjoy good food, and of course, only when the sea is
calm. If it is not,you are likely to get seasick (暈船的) , and you will find no joumey can be worse
than that. Even if you travel in good weather, sea joumeys take a long time. Few people
would like to spend a third of their holidays for the pleasure of travelling on a ship.
Travelling by plane seems to be dangerous to some people, and,it is also the most expensive of
all travelling forms, though nothing can match planes for speed and comfort(舒服). Flying at a height
of 30 000 feet, far above the clouds, and at 500 miles an hour is a very exciting experience. The
joumey is  so  smooth(平穩的 )that there is nothing to prevent you from reading or sleeping.
However you decide to spend your time, one thing is certain:you will arrive at your destination fresh
and easy. You will not have to spend the next few days recovering(恢復)from a long and tiring journey.
1. From the passage we can know that travelling by train              .
A.is the most comfortable for passengers
B.is so slow and dirty that no one wants to take a train
C. seems to be very tiring and usually takes a long time
D. will keep you awake all the time
2. What prevents people from travelling by plane?
A. Planes can be very dangerous.
B. You will feel sorry after travelling by air.
C. Flying so high brings no comfori.
D. Air travelling takes a long time.

3.In the writer's opinion,             .

A. you should never travel by train
B. travelling by air is the most comfortable
C. travelling by sea is the best form
D. car travelling is comfortable

It's 5:00 in the morning when the alarm (鬧鐘) rings in my ears. I roll out of bed and walk
blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house
is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for
a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD,Insanity.Sweat pours down my face
and into my eyes. My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the
end of the exercise,I feel extremely tired, but a smile is on my face. It's not a smile because the
DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit.
Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise
to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others
get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother's chocolate cake. They raise
their eyebrows, surprised by my "no thank you," or by my choice to have a salad. Over the
years, I have learned it's okay to just say "no." I shouldn't feel sorry for refusing food that I
don't want to eat.
So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.?What gives me the reason to just say
no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily
anxiety, increases selfconfidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape.
This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my
favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It's through commitment and sweat that I can make a
difference within myself inside and out.

1.Why is there a smile on the author's face in the morning?
A.Because she sees her family sleeping peacefully.
B.Because she finishes her favorite exercise.
C.Because she enjoys the interesting DVD.
D.Because she feels a sense of achievement.
2.Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2?
A.She doesn't treat others politely.
B.She likes to make others surprised.
C.Others don't understand what she does.
D.Others try to help her by offering her food.
3.What does the underlined word "commitment" in the last paragraph mean?
A.Good health.
B.Firm belief.
C.A strong power.
D.A regular habit.
4.What can we learn about the author from the text?
A.She acts in a strange way.
B.She wants to look different from others.
C.She aims to develop a good body shape.
D.She has difficulty getting along with others.

Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to warrant time in front of
the television have been devised (發明;想出) in the UK.
The shoes- named Square Eyes- contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to
record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to
a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day's efforts.
The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British
teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel
University in London, UK. "We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out," she
says. "And I wanted to tackle that with my design."
Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically
switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.
Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily
amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than
two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely(精確
地)one minute of TV time.
Existing pedometers(計步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps
by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through
shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. "It is possible, but it would
be a lot of effort," she says. "That was one of my main design considerations."
1. According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to _____.
A. keep a record of the steps of the wearer.
B. deal with overweight among teenagers.
C. enable children to resist(抵制) the temptation of TV.
D. prevent children from being tricked by TV programs.
2. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?
A. They regulate(調整)a child's evening TV viewing time.
B. They determine a child's daily pocket money.
C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight.
D. They contain information of the receiver.
3. What is stressed(強調) by health experts in their suggestion?
A. The exact number of steps to be taken.
B. The precise number of hours spent on TV.
C. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time.
D. The way of changing steps into TV watching time.
4.  Compared with other similar products, the new design ___.
A. make it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheat.
B. counts the wearer's steps through shaking.
C. records the sudden movement of the wearer.
D. sends teenagers' health data to the receiver.
5. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Smart Shoes Decide on Television Time
B. Smart Shoes Guarantee(保證)More Exercise
C. Smart Shoes Measure Time of Exercise
D. Smart Shoes Stop Childhood Overweight

The neglected baby is crying alone. The young man, suffering from a lack of sleep, threatens with
suicide (自殺). The marriage fails because of the husband's obsessive (沉迷的) behaviour.
Is this just another story of social breakdown in the modern age?Not really. But they are the effects
of a real social problem--Internet Addiction (上癮). Or, Internet Addiction disorder.
There have been few long-term studies of this very 21st century illness.
But the extension of the obsession is obvious from the popularity of one game alone:"Halo 2". It's a
first-person shooter developed by Budgie Studios for the Xbox video game console.By early 2005,1
million players worldwide had clocked up an amazing 100 million hours on the game.
China has about 94 million regular Internet users.Of these, a survey suggested,4.4 million are
teenagers so addicted to it that they neglect everything else.
Video gamers who have gone too far display symptoms similar to those of alcohol and drug abusers.
"The real world meant nothing to me when I was fully involved with online games.I lost track of time,
space, hunger, pain, everything, " explained Liu Pinyi, a 19-year-old college dropout. She has had
treatment in Beijing for her addiction.
What makes it similar to drugs is that online game addicts also develop a chemical imbalance in the
brain.Gaming stimulates (刺激) the production of a chemical compound that produces euphoric or
pleasant feelings. When they're away from the screen, their levels of chemicals produce this" high" drop.
And the addict suffers feelings of anxiety and headaches.
Experts say young people are attracted to video games partly because they are thrust right into the
centre of the action. This allows them to overcome a lack of confidence which people at that age can
often suffer from.
But, addiction is not the only problem.A Harvard University survey of 81 video games in 2004 found
that 98 percent contained violence for 36 percent of the total playing time.
China strengthened controls on computer games again this week, with the Ministry of Culture banning
nine online games. The ministry said it would also force game operators to technically filter out content that could cause addiction.
1. By the first paragraph, the author means to________.
A. warn some Internet users of their problems
B. show how serious the problems are if we use the Internet too much
C. direct the readers to the topic of the passage
D. show his worries about the problems in the modern age
2. The example of "Halo 2" is given to show________.
A. how popular online games are

D. game players are easy to be obsessive
3. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Web Produces Addict Disorder
